Monday night...my night to cook. We had turkey, dressing, broccoli, cranberry sauce. The turkey was purchased for Thanksgiving, but we didn't take it out of the freezer in time for Thanksgiving. To the grocery for a fresh turkey and Thanksgiving dinner. Now, in January, we have Thanksgiving again. Memo to self: next year thaw out turkey before Thanksgiving. We plan our menus and shop by the week but sometimes we cook from the pantry or freezer. Menus are flexible. I can remember my mother cooking a turkey in the Westinghouse Roaster. The bottom of the roaster held our plastic cartons and became a play area for daughter RM. Now, I use a Turkey cooking bag; stuff an onion in the turkey cavity; put some butter in with the onion; and, close the bag and bake. Daughter RM is cleaning bathroom in exchange for me cooking tomorrow night.
Nothing wrong with January Thanksgiving :) Funny thing - I still have a turkey in the freezer too. Perhaps my step-mom will work with me and lovingly suggest I work it into an upcoming menu.... just a thought! :)
When do you plan your menus? any particular day of the week? do you use coupons? Do you and RM shop together? I think that is wonderful, if that's what you guys do.
Send daughter RM an invite to be an author on this blog, if she's interested. I would really like to get to know her better! (and offer condolences for having to clean the bathroom...)
hey RR...how do I write on the blog; this appears to be a comment on what I wrote on Sunday night which was "Welcome..." Also, the time is not correct for this zone?
RM and I sit down to discuss a six week menu plan, usually on Friday or Sunday when we have more time. We have six sheets and write sticky notes for each day with a menu on the sticky note. We have a few extra menus on sticky notes that we can use if we need a change. Once the six weeks are planned, we don't have to change much. We have a basic menu...family favorites...meat loaf, chicken casserole, etc. because the kids are not at the experimental stage yet. By shopping for a planned menu and re-using the menus on a rotating six week schedule, we can buy enough to stock the pantry and carry us through some "lean" weeks.
We shop together most of the time. We have been shopping once a week lately because of the fresh items. We make a list for the things we need for the upcoming week menu. Then we try to stick to the list. I'm bad about seeing something on the shelf and just putting it in the cart.
We use coupons. RM is the coupon genius. We organized the coupons in a loose-leaf binder using baseball card plastic sleeves. We had the pages lined up by aisles at the Commissary. Commissary is re-modeling so we will have to re-do the sheets soon.
Read thePioneerWoman.com blog and I'm soooooooooo impressed. Don't expect beautiful pictures, well organized categories, etc. from this beginner.
Send me an email with instructions on how to invite her. I want all of you to be contributors, not just commentors.
